I am the Head of Communication and Editorial for The Lenfest Institute for Journalism.

I’m the creator of Solution Set, an email newsletter featuring deeply reported case studies that highlight replicable best practices for publishers. Each issue focuses on innovative ideas in revenue generation, product development, community engagement, and more.

I lead The Lenfest Institute’s strategic communications, supporting the Institute’s publishing, digital fundraising, and social media strategies.

I manage the Lenfest News Philanthropy Network, a community of practice focused on supporting fundraising in journalism. More than 1,000 people have registered for the Network’s conference, workshops, and in-depth training courses on topics such as grant writing, major donor development, and membership.

I also coordinated and managed From the Source, a 10-newsroom collaborative reporting project covering the Delaware River Watershed, in partnership with The National Geographic Society.

I have co-authored several reports and strategy playbooks, including The Membership Guide, a practical resource for membership in news, The Newsletter Guide, a comprehensive playbook for email newsletter strategy, and Business Models for Local News: A Field Scan, a report on the prospects of finding and seeding new business models for local journalism.

I regularly consult with Institute grantees and have reported on key lessons from programs such as Table Stakes, a challenge-based change management program for newsrooms, and the Facebook Digital Subscription Acquisition, Digital Subscription Retention, and Membership Accelerators.

I previously reported on journalism innovation for the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University with a particular focus on news business models, product development, and local journalism.

Prior to joining the Lab, I reported for Reuters in its Detroit bureau. I primarily covered the city’s bankruptcy, the largest in U.S. history. I’ve also reported for Automotive News, a leading trade publication covering the global auto industry, and Michigan Radio, the NPR-affiliate in southern Michigan.

I was also editor-in-chief of The Michigan Daily, the independent student newspaper at the University of Michigan. While I was not in the Daily newsroom, I attended classes and earned a Bachelor of Arts in public policy.

I live with my family in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
